When my son was in preschool the teachers made an adorable list of what quality they were “Thankful For” in each child. It came home on a brightly colored, decorated sheet. Next to some children’s names it said things like “ability to read or singing voice.” Next to my son’s name it said “curiosity.” I instantly loved it. It was just so him.

I’m reminded of this as we approach the milestone of moving on to High School. We are in the midst of an Awards Season. It’s not time for the Golden Globes and Academy Awards…it’s time for the Academic Awards. I truly believe that they don’t all need trophies, medals and certificates…because in life you don’t always get awards. Honestly, I feel like most of life’s greatest achievements don’t involve awards–but that’s a thought for another day…

So as I prepare to smile and congratulate other children and parents on their awards both in person and on Facebook, I will continue to be thankful for my son’s curiosity. I am thankful for much more than that, but it’s a nice reminder of something that is special to him.

If your child will be walking across school stages and accepting awards in the coming week, that’s wonderful. I truly mean that. One benefit of having 2 children is seeing things from different perspectives. My other love will most likely continue to walk across stages… They are being recognized for hard work and skills. Be proud of them! And if your child will be watching from their chair, remember the special things that THEY bring to this world. Be Thankful and Be Proud.

This gallery is on honor of Curiosity. Honesty. Sense of Humor. Creativity. Resilience. Courage. Kindness… They are not tracked on a standardized test and they don’t need a trophy. Just be quietly proud and love them.
