Senior Portraits: Your Time to Shine…

  • July 2, 2019

We want you to shine! Pinterest Boards, Instagram, and even the well-meaning Mom might make you a little crazy when selecting the perfect Senior Portrait outfits. Don’t stress… Check out the suggestions below. Be yourself. And you will ROCK your portrait session…

Being well prepared for you senior photo session can make the difference between average and fabulous portraits. Follow these easy tips and you’ll be well on your way to looking your absolute best. If you have any additional questions, feel free to call, text or email.

Clothing Tips

Keep it simple and make sure you feel good in the clothes you select. Have your clothes and accessories ready the night before your session. Choose clothes that reflect your style and are appropriate for the event. Make sure they are clean and free of wrinkles. Plan on changing fairly quickly. The faster you change, the more time we have to photograph and the more portrait choices you’ll have later. Bring more or less clothing options depending on which session type you selected. It’s okay to bring extra that you may not wear. If you’re self-conscious about your arms, avoid sleeveless shirts and tank tops, as they tend to make arms look fuller. Also, for girls, sleeveless is usually more flattering than spaghetti straps. Please be aware of your bra straps as well. Avoid stripes and plaid. Solid colors photograph much better than busy patterns. Bring a variety of colors and mix the level of styles. Some should be dressy, some dressy casual, and some casual. If you’re comfortable in a dress and boots, bring them! A jean jacket, scarf or cardigan can quickly change up an outfit and can be added even in the Mini Sessions. Overall, if you feel good in an outfit, chances are, you look good too. Dress like yourself.  Be authentic.

Many of our Senior Portrait Sessions occur on location. Opportunities to change outfits may be somewhat limited. In these circumstances, please plan ahead for ways to easily change your look without having to get completely undressed. Camis are great for quick changes.

Shoes

Heels and boots are always flattering and glamorous. Flats or bare feet can also work if you mix them with the right outfit. Not every portrait will show your feet, but some will.

Hair

Bring hair spray, clips, pins, and whatever else is needed to keep your hair out of your eyes if it’s windy. Bring a brush and mirror for quick hair touch-ups. A little curl cream or pomade can go a long way to help prevent frizz and fly-aways. (Young men, don’t get a haircut right before the session as it may cause tan lines.) Do not make drastic changes to your hairstyle right before your photo session. This could add unneeded drama to your life.

Makeup

Makeup that is well done is one of the best preparations you can make for your session. It will even out skin tones and help give your portraits that extra pop for a model-like look. Even if you don’t normally wear makeup or wear very little, take the time to do it well and your portraits will look their best. Mascara should be clean and not clumpy. Please don’t be concerned about minor (or major) breakouts. We can touch all that up. Seriously, don’t sweat it even for a minute! That’s why you have us. Make sure that your face make-up is blended into your neck so that when you look in the mirror your neck is not too white. Also check to see if you have tan lines that will show with the different outfits you are going to wear. Bring chapstick or lip gloss to keep your lips moist.

Jewelry

Keep it simple. The proper jewelry can really complement your outfit. Select items that don’t distract from your face. It’s nice to have a variety to choose from and it doesn’t hurt to bring numerous options with you.

Props

  • Feel free to bring props that help show who you are. Or not. Whatever you are comfortable with. If you select a session with multiple clothing options, some popular choices are:
  • Sports equipment (soccer ball, basketball, softball bat, etc.)
  • Sports uniforms
  • Musical instruments
  • Other items (favorite book, dance outfit, art supplies, etc.)
  • Your pet. Yes…you can bring your dog!

Glasses

If you wear glasses everyday like me, wear you glasses. They make you, you. Most lenses have a glare. The safest option is to check with your eye doctor and ask if they’ll loan you a similar pair without lenses or pop your lenses out if you feel comfortable doing that. Transition lenses need to be removed. (I stock a few pairs, but the frames may not be to your liking.)

Bringing Friends & Parents

Friends or parents are welcome and often can be a helpful. However, if they distract you, it may be best to meet them when the session is over. I personally LOVE to take a portrait with a parent if they are with you. It just makes me happy. So…don’t forget to tell mom and dad that they may be in the portraits too and that they may want to check her hair etc. If you’d like to add on a Family or Sibling Session to your Senior Portrait Sessions, we have options for that too.

Weather

Sun and/or clouds are great (clouds even out the light and can make for ideal shooting conditions). If it’s actually raining or hurricane winds are blowing, we’ll have to reschedule.

Undergarments

Please make sure the colors of your undergarment coordinate well with your outfits and don’t show through your clothing. Try on your clothing with the undergarments and make sure all is good.

General Notes…

  • Please arrive on time to your appointment. Showing up late means you lose camera time. I often have sessions booked back-to-back and I don’t want you to miss a minute.
  • Sleep! Make sure you get at least 2 nights of good sleep before your portrait session so that you will look fresh.
  • Water. Hydrate well the day of and the day before your session.

Relax and Have Fun!

I strive to make the portrait sessions fun. If you are enjoying the session, it will show through and the result will be better images.

Don’t be afraid to show your true personality in your Senior Portraits. Bring the guitar. Hug your dog.  Show us who you are! The more personal, the better. We will have wardrobe changes and can show your different sides as well.

Contact us today if you’d like to book your Senior Portrait Session to capture this special moment in time for you and your family.

Honored for Outstanding Portraiture

  • February 14, 2019

I am honored and proud that my recent portrait, The Farmer, received the highest score for outstanding portraiture at the Professional Photographers Association of Massachusetts (PPAM) Annual Convention.

The winning portrait, The Farmer, was taken in Northborough and is a black and white portrait of local farmer, Kerrie Yellick of Yellick’s Farm Stand. The portrait was taken as a personal project. I plan to share more about the people around town who make Northborough a special place.

I also received 3 Blue Ribbons for 3 Merit Images from PPAM.

Professional Photographers of Massachusetts (PPAM) is affiliated with the International Photographers Association and Professional Photographers of America (PPA).

PPA is a worldwide association which exists to assist its members in achieving their professional, artistic and fraternal goals; promote public awareness of the profession; and to advance the making of images in all of its disciplines as an art, a science and a visual recorder of history.

The Massachusetts state affiliate, PPAM is comprised of more than 200 photographers, suppliers and image makers.

Kerrie Yellick started the garden at her historic Hudson Street home four years ago. She describes it as a small family-owned and operated farm selling produce and cut flowers grown naturally without the use of pesticides or chemicals. YOUR MOMENTS: 12 in 12

The Details on MOMENTS: 12 in 12

I love photographing families and children. Once in a while, someone I have photographed leaves this world. My heart is alway heavy when I hear this news, but also joyful for the fact that we captured some moments to hold onto. (Sometimes it’s even a four-legged family member.) This past November, a special client passed away and that really started me thinking about the heart of what I do. I decided to give 12 Portrait Sessions away in the 12 months of 2019…

Each month I will announce that month’s contest or program. Some will be fun, most will be based on giving back. 1 winner each month will receive a Gift Certificate for a free Session worth up to $300. It can be used on your own family or gifted to someone you love.

More on that Special Client who passed…

Back in 2013, I joined a program called the Olivia Act where people were able to nominate someone for a free portrait session; Someone who otherwise might not have the available time or resources. Through this, I met and photographed a wonderful grandmother with her granddaughter. Janet, the grandmother, passed away in November 2018. She is pictured here with her granddaughter walking hand in hand.

Started by a photographer from Texas, the Olivia Act is named after one of the children killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings, whose family had taken family photos only days before. Realizing the comfort the family would take from these photos, the Olivia Act challenges photographers to offer free family photo shoots to families that otherwise might not have them done.

Thank you to everyone who liked, shared and emailed in for our June Post.

The correct location of the June image above is Bancroft Tower located in Worcester. The tower is a 56-foot-high stone and granite tower, which looks like a miniature feudal castle. It is located in Salisbury Park and was erected in 1900, in memory of Worcester native politician, historian, and statesman George Bancroft.

The Boroughs & Beyond… June 2018

Summer Solstice is a holiday in my book!

Now that the weather is brighter and warmer, I’m loving getting out to explore and photograph more local places. This month’s Boroughs & Beyond image is a fun one. An interesting, local, lesser-known landmark…

So, where was this image taken? Do you know?

Play Along!! Here’s how it works… Each month I will post an image taken somewhere near the Boroughs area.

The first 3 people to correctly identify the location will win a set a Susan Ogar Photography note cards. How to win…

Thank you to everyone who liked, shared and emailed in for our May Post.

The correct location of the May image above is The Old North Bridge in Concord, MA. Allow me to geek out a bit… here is some history and fun facts: The North Bridge (often called the Old North Bridge) is a historical site in the Battle of Concord, the first day of battle in the American War of Independence. The current wooden pedestrian bridge is a replica of the one that stood at the day of the battle. It and nearby sites are now part of the Minute Man National Historical Park of the National Park Service, an extremely popular tourist destination.

It spans the Concord River 0.5 miles northeast from the start of the river at the confluence of the Assabet River and the Sudbury River at Egg Rock. For local Boroughs friends, the Assabet River runs through Northborough as well. The North Bridge in my photograph is actually a recent restoration of the last bridge built on this site in 1956. The 1956 bridge is the fifth bridge to occupy this hallowed ground since the time of the battle in 1775. The bridge that was there in 1775, the “battle bridge,” was taken down in 1788.

Thankful for Curiosity… and being okay going home empty handed in Awards Season…

  • June 15, 2018

When my son was in preschool the teachers made an adorable list of what quality they were “Thankful For” in each child. It came home on a brightly colored, decorated sheet. Next to some children’s names it said things like “ability to read or singing voice.” Next to my son’s name it said “curiosity.” I instantly loved it. It was just so him.

I’m reminded of this as we approach the milestone of moving on to High School. We are in the midst of an Awards Season. It’s not time for the Golden Globes and Academy Awards…it’s time for the Academic Awards. I truly believe that they don’t all need trophies, medals and certificates…because in life you don’t always get awards. Honestly, I feel like most of life’s greatest achievements don’t involve awards–but that’s a thought for another day…

So as I prepare to smile and congratulate other children and parents on their awards both in person and on Facebook, I will continue to be thankful for my son’s curiosity. I am thankful for much more than that, but it’s a nice reminder of something that is special to him.

If your child will be walking across school stages and accepting awards in the coming week, that’s wonderful. I truly mean that. One benefit of having 2 children is seeing things from different perspectives. My other love will most likely continue to walk across stages… They are being recognized for hard work and skills. Be proud of them! And if your child will be watching from their chair, remember the special things that THEY bring to this world. Be Thankful and Be Proud.

This gallery is on honor of Curiosity. Honesty. Sense of Humor. Creativity. Resilience. Courage. Kindness… They are not tracked on a standardized test and they don’t need a trophy. Just be quietly proud and love them.
